Most days I arrive in my studio, eager to express an idea or test a new technique rattling around in my head, but because paint never behaves as I expect, the first stroke of my brush or blade takes me in a completely different direction. So, I learn again each time, to let the music or my thoughts take me for a ride, using my paints to mark the way.
I recall as a kid, being awestruck by the magazine photos of Pollock, Rothko and Franz Kline and their giant canvases. Thank you, Mom for collecting those old Life magazines! In design school I was keenly interested in illustration, rigorous and controlled, but in my journey of discovery I have found absolute joy (and sometimes torment) in color fields and abstract expressionism. Lately, I am inspired by the works of Jenkins and Richter.
